New York Times Review: A Composer and Virtuoso Dresses Up the Mandolin
The new scores were performed with much the same power and clarity that Orpheus brought to a pair of more familiar works. A suite from Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti,” in a new arrangement by Paul Chihara, opened the program with an explosion of lyricism and rhythmic vitality. With the “Symphonic Dances From ‘West Side Story’ ” as a model, Mr. Chihara redistributed the opera’s vocal melodies to the strings and woodwinds, and had the brasses supply the jazz elements. The orchestra closed the concert with a beautifully sculptured performance of Copland’s durable “Appalachian Spring” Suite.

It was so much fun performing the premiere of Paul Chihara's excellent orchestral suite arrangement of Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti. Listen to the entire concert below - thanks WQXR for the recording!
